Core Subjects

Frost Anti-Smoking Association PSA

Filmed by Kiwi Dumbrique. Edited by me. Made for COR1.

A public service announcement about the negatives of smoking and peer pressure. This was one of my first filming projects, with me as the writer. Writing with the goal of sending a message wasn't new to me, but it was a good way to get used to writing properly again. Filming was also quite smooth-sailing, but editing was a little less smooth. It came out well, though. FASA still doesn't exist, by the way.

LILASON

Directed by Dyllan Coronel. Co-written with Dyllan Coronel and Kayla Villegas. Starring Ethan Agad. Made for COR3.

A short film circling around a school teacher indulging in vices. This film was written around the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 3, good health and well-being. The filming process was quite tumultuous, but it was everyone's first taste of the filming process. I ended up starring on another short film for Teatro, Times New Roman, but that's irrelevant. Finding a way to implement the Sustainable Development Goal into a script while making it an interesting story was a challenge, but one that really helped hone my writing.

One Must Imagine

Illustrated by Kai Natividad. Co-written by Raphael Mahipus. Made for COR5NS.

A mini-comic focusing on a rock experiencing the horrible, traumatic process of life. By the process of life, it's actually just the process of metamorphosis. I had the greatest idea for a story regarding rocks and metamorphosis---as the task was to make a mini-comic detailing rock processes---which I eventually spun into this dramatic, unsettling story about struggling to keep living, and living anyway. Inspired by The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus.

Unorthodox Detriments — Problems that Affect the Four Spheres of The Earth

Co-written with Dyllan Coronel, Raphael Mahipus, Marzhan Marimon, and Kai Natividad. Made for COR5NS.

A paper written about four problems that affect the four spheres of the Earth. This task was the first task I made with the colloquially-named Team Neuros. This group of people meant a lot to me, as they were my first real group in the school, and they happened to be some of the best people I could've worked with. It made making a subject that I didn't particularly have strong thoughts on feel fun. 🎺

Robert Frost Radio 211.1

Hosted by Ayahzel Dologmanding and Ma. Shanea Madla. Also features Noah Lector, Yessha Lei Chu, Kirsten Bue, Samantha Deboma, and Daniel Matuan. Co-written by Ayahzel Dologmanding, Kiwi Dumbrique, and Daniel Matuan. Made for COR8.

An excerpt from FM 211.1, "Phone Booth Radio." This was surprisingly fun to make. I'm not a very good Filipino speaker, but I was assisted very heavily by my groupmates and they helped make this small radio-drama feel like an actual clip from a radio station. I was very particular with how everything sounded for no reason in particular, and we even recorded in the same "studio" (which was just our classroom after dismissal.)

MUKHANG IBA

Starring Ethan Kervie Agad and Mary Jessa Ramoza. Made for COR8.

A video of somebody suspecting a friend of theirs is losing it. When our teacher said our task was to make a film---a film that could be about anything, as long as it told a story---I knew I had to do something spooky. And so I did---I wrote the script in about a day or two, refined it throughout the coming days, and tried filming it alongside Pasikatay practices---which proved harder than expected. It ended up being very good, though, so I'm proud.

FRO-007 Survey Analysis

With help from Kirsten Bue, Anna Gabrielle Fetiza, Jelliannah Lopez, and Kai Natividad. Made for COR10.

Multiple analyses of a survey conducted by FRO-007. Tasks like these on their own aren't particularly interesting, but the creative freedom you can get allows it to be less of a drag to work on and more of something that you can chill to while you edit. That was my mindset when making these---even if you aren't the biggest fan of Math, you can find ways to make it more interesting for yourself. All that matters is if they let you, and if you let yourself.

GROUP L - Household Income and Expenditure Patterns

Featuring Noah Lector. Co-written by Noah Lector and Karlo Tolentino, with additional help from Yosin Mar Cayabyab and Mary Jessa Ramoza. Made for COR10.

For something as mundane as this task---being given a dataset and told to analyze it and make a video on the analysis---I had to improvise to make the task somewhat more interesting. Thus became this video, a video-essay style analysis of the data with voice narration, opening/ending "cinematics" and occasional jokes sprinkled in. I feel like my teacher expected something wholly different.

Elements 1-60 described in 10 words or less

With voiceover from Raphael Mahipus and Douglas Oson. Additional help from Kirsten Bue and Briana Ramo. Made for COR11NS.

Originally, this task was supposed to be a song cover performed live in front of the class, with the lyrics of said song rewritten to describe the elements, including its atomic number. It ended up changing into making a video that describes the elements in some way, and this was the easiest (and most entertaining) way to go around it. Totally worth it.

An-GEN

Starring Samantha Deboma and Raphael Mahipus. Made for COR13.

This was supposed to be a simple assignment. Didn't have to work too hard on it, just find a way to implement a certain area of philosophy into a story "simulation." I ended up writing one of the best stories I've ever written, in about three days. I still don't know how I managed, but it worked out, and I managed to implement metaphysics (our assigned area of philosophy) alongside another theme in 7 minutes. Maybe one day I'll add more to this.

Sandiwang Perlas: A Case Study

Co-written with Kai Natividad. Made for COR14.

An analysis paper discussing the local youth-led non-profit organization, Sandiwang Perlas. Their goal was admirable to us, and a lot of the people that are behind the project or are active members are people we used to look up to in our old school, so we couldn't help but dig deeper into this organization. It fascinates me to see people my age managing/founding something so organized and planned.

EBA #005: GIRL (egg baby)

Made for COR15.

The Egg Baby task for Personal Development was certainly one of the more interesting tasks I've ever been given. I had a lot of fun making the character of "GIRL", as well as writing things that, at the end of the day, wouldn't really matter that much for my grade. Making my Egg Baby that I was supposed to cherish dearly a horror beyond my comprehension felt just right.

Summary of the Semester

Made for COR13, COR14, and COR15.

I wasn't particularly thrilled about this assignment at first, but the more I did for it, the more I realized how fun it would be to make everything. A lot of designs were made up on the spot---I had no plans for what the magazine would look like, and the contents were all written the moment I got to them. It turned out amazingly, though, and I'm still proud of how it turned out. I didn't have to go anywhere outside my house for any of this---just made what came up in my head, and it worked like a charm.

Reflection

It shouldn't be a surprise that the Core subjects are incredibly important for a learner such as I, but they were taught in a way that kept things interesting, leaving it as something that I quite enjoyed learning through. Some subjects were difficult to go through at times, but that's school life. It's a shame that these subjects are planned to be phased out considering their importance for a growing student, and hopefully future Senior High Schoolers learn just as much. These subjects are important for any student, so these subjects being in the curriculum should not be a debate.
